Monica Youn

“Over the past several years, I’ve been fascinated by the idea of hidden messages and narrations, which is why research has become a large part of my creative process.  Serious or contrasting allusions usually find their work into my work.  Many of my pieces reference literature, history, folklore, or the language of flowers to emphasize a thought or feeling.  I take joy in weaving an extra story line into my pieces.”

 

Monica Youn combines traditional mediums with organic material to create narratives of  identity, folklore, and her personal experiences as a first generation Korean American.  Youn researches the past to both explore her roots, discuss social intricacies, and perception in a media centered world.

 

Born in Essex, NJ, Monica Youn currently resides in Harford, MD.  She received her BS in Art+Design and Business Marketing from Towson University.  Youn exhibited her solo shows, "Tall Tales", at Towson University’s Center of the Arts and "Modern Lore" at Hamilton Arts Gallery.  She participated in group shows at venues throughout Maryland including  Maryland Art Place (MAP), Delaplaine Arts Center, Asian Arts & Culture Center, Maryland Federation of Art (MFA), Station North, Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center, and Havre de Grace's Gallery 220.  Youn has also shown at Lore Degenstein Gallery in Selinsgrove, PA, Lancaster Art Vault in Lancaster, PA, and Index Gallery, NJ.  Her work is currently on display at the Harford Artist's Association.
